Every seventh chord is made up of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and b7th notes of the major scale

To make a “D seventh” (D7) chord we use

the 1^st note D

the 3^rd note F#

the 5^th note A

the b7^th (half step lower from the 7^th) note C

This gives us the notes D, F#, A and C which form the “D seventh” chord
